TwistedPolygon runned over a CMS (content manager system) called Mambo. Well mambo was opensource until last august when Miro, the company that runs mambo did an hostile takeover and put the original core dev team out of the picture. I wasn't aware of this until this afternoon. It happens that the original develop team has started their new CMS called Joomla! Right now Joomla! is like an updated version of Mambo with bug fixes and an extra feature here and there. It is totally backwards compatible with the current version of Mambo, but it will certainly not remain as Joomla will evolve to a total independent CMS.
If you have a sharp eye you noticed that I said that TwistedPolygon runned over Mambo. It's right! It no longer runs. Right now what you are seeing is Joomla! in action. It wasn't an easy transition, the site was broken for two hours while uploading (which I used to go to the gym) and afterwards all of the backend just didn't bother to work. The backend, you ask,it's the nifty place where all the admins play. Well, all the admins where very sad to see a stupid error on their sacred playground so I had to fix it... For another 2 hours!
Why Joomla! and not Mambo?
Because Joomla! is open source and it will certainly take over the Mambo community as the Mambo concept has changed. Third party developers now have to pay Miro to take part on the project, which means less addons and less variety. On the other hand there is no guaranty that Mambo will remain free, maybe they will start charging for license fees, etc.
That said, Open Source for Life!!!

I was playing around when I noticed that the common user could not
submit news. This goes against our filosofy, we are not a big corporate
site and we do not intend to be, so not to worry, everything is taken
care! Right now registered users can not only submit news, they
can also submit FAQ's, walktroughs, reviews, etc. All done on the fly through the user menu! Make sure to check it out! |
