World of Illusion Author: DJ Tigresa and MC Pantera Email: djtigresa@classicgaming.com, mcpantera@classicgaming.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mickey Mouse has already appeared in two Genesis games (Castle of Illusion and Fantasia), and Donald Duck has appeared in one (Quack- Shot). Now the two most popular animated Disney characters of all time join forces in World of Illusion, which blows away all previous Disney games thanks to fantastic graphics and a two- player simultaneous mode (why don’t more games have this?). You control Mickey and Donald as they explore five levels filled with magical enemies and obstacles. The difficulty level of the game is set a bit too easy, but it’s so much fun just to explore each level that you won’t care. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIPS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The two-player mode is all about cooperation. You won’t even make it past the first part of the first level without working in tandem with the other player. Stay close together on the screen so that you don’t hit each other with magic. There aren’t any real hid den areas in World of Illusion, but there are out-of-the-way locations in some levels. Before you take the obvious path through a level, see if you can’t go off on another path first. In an attempt to make our job as hard as possible, Sega designed World of Illusion with three slightly different sets of levels—one set for Mickey Mouse, another set for Donald Duck, and a third set for the two-player mode. We’ll take you through the two-player mode, but you’ll have to figure out the one-player levels on your own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adventure Walkthrough ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== Stage 1 =============================================================================== LEVEL 1-1: When you reach the log see-saw, have one player jump up to the next see-saw, then lower his rope to the other player. Keep jump ing and using the rope to climb to the top. The rest of this level is very simple: just keep going right and using magic on the bad guys. LEVEL 1-2: There’s a nar row tunnel near the beginning of the mine where Donald’s large rear end prevents him from going any further. Have Mickey use magic on the bad guy to the right, then pull Donald through the gap. If you don’t get rid of the bad guy, Donald will fly into him and take damage. Later on, you’ll find a mine cart. Each player should jump onto one side of the cart, then alternate pressing Down to make the cart move. Jumping and landing on the cart will not work. You have to push Down. Keep moving the cart until you reach the end of the level. LEVEL 1-3: Look closely at the webs. Some of them have small holes that turn into much bigger holes when you walk over them. Don’t fall off the bottom of the screen! Near the end of the level, you have to walk along a spider’s web as it spins its way to the right. Stay close to the spider and jump for the item bags. LEVEL 1-4: Each player should stand on one of the middle ledges on the left or right side and shoot magic at the spider boss. When the spider climbs behind the webs, you can’t hit it, but it can’t hit you either. Hit the spi der boss six times with magic to defeat it and earn the flying carpet spell. =============================================================================== Stage 2 =============================================================================== LEVEL 2-1: You’ll put the flying carpet spell to quick use in this level. Fly slowly to the right and soar up or down to avoid the torna does and the flying birds. There’s a long group of cards near the beginning of the level. After that, stay near the top of the screen to find item bags. LEVEL 2-2: There’s more rope action in this level, especially at the beginning. When a cliff is too high for one player to jump onto, have him jump onto the other player’s head, then jump to the cliff and lower his rope to pull the other player up. Near the end of the level, there are two skinny ledges with item bags on them. Both players have to jump onto the skinny ledge to make it move. The second skinny ledge is the end of the level. LEVEL 2-3: The clouds with faces on them and the clouds that don’t sparkle are safe to jump on. The clouds that do sparkle will collapse after a short delay. Keep jump ing along safe clouds until you reach two face clouds. Jump on the lower face and jump right onto a collapsing cloud, then jump back to the left. Now you can jump onto the higher face cloud and make it through the rest of the level. Items come out of the two pianos near the end of the level, but not all of them are good; watch out for the bombs. LEVEL 2-4: The wheel in the center of the room spins and releases one dragon at a time, which drops to the center of the screen. Each player should stand on one side of the screen and hit the dragon with magic as soon as it lands. If the dragon isn’t turned into stone right away, he’ll spit a fireball that you have to jump over. Turn all six dragons into stone to earn the magic bubble spell. =============================================================================== Stage 3 =============================================================================== LEVEL 3-1: Swim up and right at the beginning of the level to find a small tunnel with two item bags inside. Grab them and float down to the bottom of the level, then swim right. When you reach the wall, swim up to the passage leading left. Swim left and down to the item bag, then swim through the wall to take it. About halfway through the level are two “bubble walls” that you can’t pass through. Swim into a wall until you see the shell on the other side, then swim back to the left. The shell will fol low you and block the bubble wall so you can swim to the right. LEVEL 3-2: There are two item bags in this level that you’ll have to cooperate to reach. After you get them, just keep going to the right until you find a shell on wheels. Jump onto the shell and you’ll roll to the right, smashing several pillars along the way. When the shell crashes and you’re thrown onto the ledge, run to the right before the roof smashes you. LEVEL 3-3: Look closely at the floor at the beginning of the level. The cracks In the wood turn into holes when you walk onto them. After you pass the holes and climb some stairs, you have to run past spears in the roof. The best strategy is for one player to make the spears drop, and for the other player to follow behind. After you pass the spears, drop off the ledge and go left to find an item bag, then go right to a huge set of stairs. At the top of the stairs, go right and run down the hail as it fills up with water. It’s just a short journey from the end of the hall to the exit. LEVEL 3-4: The shark boss swims back and forth at the bottom of the screen with only his fin showing above the wood. When he attacks, he swims straight at you or jumps into the screen from either side. Both players should stand near the middle of the screen and use magic on the shark when it attacks. Defeat the shark to cam the box transport spell. =============================================================================== Stage 4 =============================================================================== LEVEL 4-1: After you jump out of the fishtank, walk right and drop to the next ledge. Jump onto the paint tube to make it squirt out (which is use less, but a neat graphic effect). Go left and take the item bags, then walk right to the books. Jump t the top of the books, then jump up and right to the bottle. Walk right and take the 1-Up hat, then walk left and jump onto the bottle to make a “ledge” of spray. Walk left to the red book and jump over the book into the open jar. You’ll enter a bonus area with plenty of cards. Run to the right and grab as many as you can. When you finish the area, jump up and right to the open box and jump inside. LEVEL 4-2: This Christmas-theme level has a lot of cards and items along the bottom of the level, but it’s safer to walk right along the ledges at the top of the level. When you’re done exploring the lower path, jump up to the higher path and see what else you can find. Look for dice at the top of the screen. When you see one, walk close to it (bit not underneath) and make it drop in front of you. The exit is to the far right. When the exit bal loons pop, you’ll appear back in Level 4-1. Jump right over the box and take the card, then go left to the door. Use your magic to teleport to the next door up. Walk right across the ruler to the next door and use magic to teleport again. Go down and right from here and jump into the cookie box to finish the level. LEVEL 4-3: It’s easy to make your way through this candy-laud level, but you might get stuck near the end. Jump into the red Jell-O and let yourself sink through it and drop to the next ledge. Sink through all of the Jell-Os to find the witch boss. Keep jump ing and using magic on the old crone as he flies around the screen. She will land and shoot magic bolts at you, but you can easily jump over the bolts. Defeat the witch and you get the card command spell, then you appear back in Level 4-1, Jump into the cookie box for a 1-Up, then walk left and go through the door. =============================================================================== Level 5 =============================================================================== LEVEL 5-1: There’s a 1- Up ioop in this level. When you reach the six dice and the “PRESS ME” sign, jump onto the 6 on the far left. You’ll teleport several screens back into the level, just before the 1-Up hat in the air above the floating cards. Go right and collect the 1-Up, then go right to the dice and jump onto the 6 again. Repeat until you’ve built up as many tries as you want. When you’re ready to move on, jump onto the 5 to enter a bonus area, then jump onto the 1 to open the door to Level 5-2. LEVEL 5-2: Walk in front of the third door from the left and press Up to go inside. You’ll appear back in Level 4-2! Finish the level to return to the doors. Go through the second door from the left, then the fifth door, sixth door, and finally, the fourth door, which takes you to the next level. LEVEL 5-3: A flying wiz ard creates holes in the floor at the start of the level Zap him a few times and keep going to the right until you find stairs going up and left. Climb up the stairs and jump onto the white but ton to light up the curtains, then jump up and right onto the ledge. Walk right and through the wall to find an item bag, the return to the left. Play through the rest of the level and jump into the chest at the end to reach the exit to Level 5-4. LEVEL 5-4: Almost there! Just keep going to the right and taking the item bags until you enter the chamber of the final boss. LEVEL 5-5: Jump onto the moving poles and keep using your magic to hit the final boss in the head. You can also jump off the poles to hit the boss’s head. When the white ghosts appear on the screen, you can hide in the lower-left and lower-right corners and the ghosts won’t be able to hit you. Hit the boss in the head eight or nine times and you win! Kick back and watch the above-average ending sequence, with Mickey and Donald performing a magic trick. =============================================================================== Secrets =============================================================================== PASSWORDS: Use these card codes to jump into any of the three dif ferent sets of levels.
