Toki by Sega/Sammy Author: DJ Tigresa and MC Pantera Email: djtigresa@classicgaming.com, mcpantera@classicgaming.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are an ape named Toki, but you haven’t always been. As a young man born and raised in the wild, you find Wanda, abandoned and sick, and nurse her back to health. You both fall in love and live happily ever after. Not much of a game plot eh? OK, let’s throw in a bad guy, named Dr. Andrew Stark. He’s a genetic engineer who has escaped his kidnappers and is blaming his imprisonment on you. First, he kidnaps Wanda, then turns you into a monkey. You must Save Wanda! As Toki, you’ll battle through stage after stage of fiendish enemies and tricky obstacles. Each stage has three parts, and if you lose a life before reaching the end of a part, you have to start all over at the beginning of that part. Your only weapon is spit, but you can power it up for various patterns. These include the triple-shot, super blast, looping fireballs, and bouncing spitballs. Along the way are extra lives, invincibility, and power sneakers. An options menu allows you to begin with up to nine lives and seven continues, which decreases the challenge a little bit. Nonetheless, there’s enough challenge to entertain even skilled players. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stand back while shooting the Thorny Spikes that rises from the ground. When you destroy it, fireballs shoot out in five directions. Be ready to duck down behind a platform or jump in between fireballs. Near the end of Stage 1-2, after the two sets of spikes in side-by-side holes (push down to see them), you’ll climb over a final hill before finding the exit. As you drop off the side of this hill, hold left on the control pad to find a crevice with an extra life At the end of Stage 1-3, after the moving platform, drop down below the last two solid platforms to find five coins and Super Shoes, which you’ll need to jump back out of the hole you’re in. The boss for Stage 1 is Stark’s machine. He moves up and down while four heads on each side breaths fire. Move to the far left to avoid being hit by the flames. Shoot on the left side, then run under to the far right, avoid the flames and shoot the heads on the right. When shooting the heads, hit the bottom two straight on, then when the machine rises, stand under the other two heads and shoot upwards. After destroying all of the heads the entire machine explodes. Hint: You can attack this machine before it gets a chance to fight (while it’s still gray) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch out for enemies overhead when jumping with Super Sneakers. Food inside the block at the center isn’t worth the risk. An extra life is on a platform on the right side near the exit. To reach it you must grab the Super Sneakers below, then climb up below the extra life and jump over it. After the swinging chain, climb up to the collapsing green platforms on the right and rapidly jump up them until you reach the top, where you’ll find an extra life. The boss is Primeval. His pattern is easy: Stand to the far left, facing right, and shoot rapidly. Also shoot the flipping monkeys that pop out from behind him. Occasionally, he’ll rush at you, then return to the right, but if you stay to the far left he won’t hit you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There isn’t any secrets to this level, but it will take some getting used to. During Stage 3-2, you’ll have to swim against the wall to find entrances. At the beginning, swim to the upper-left area to find an oversized spitball weapon, then swim back to the upper right and shoot the bricks. A fire weapon is above the exit. At the beginning of Stage 3-3, swim right and down between the two rows of spikes. Go down and swim through the narrow passage to the left. Follow the passage that twists to the right then swim to the top to find the exit. The boss is Boomer. He’s a submarine that shoots torpedoes. Stay to the left and fire rapidly while in direct line with the sub, when he smiles swim to the bottom to avoid his charge while continuing to fire rapidly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Near the beginning of Stage 4-1 you’ll see an extra life as you’re walking down an incline. The rocks above prevent you from jumping to it, but wait for a bat to fly over then you can bounce off his back to reach the extra life. The boss at the end f Stage 4-3 is Eyesore. He moves from side to side, swooping down at the center. When he stops at each side, he’ll release a group of eyeballs that spin around him and then attack you. Stand at the center of the screen and fire diagonally up to shoot the eyeballs, then he swoops down. Jump over him and repeat the pattern until he’s defeated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As you drop down to the exit on Stage 5-1, stay to the left as often as possible. This is the safest path with the least number of enemies. On Stage 5-2, you’ll see an invincibility star out of reach above. The bird to the right will spit fireballs, which you can jump from to reach the next star. The boss at the end of Stage 5-3 is Belcher. He takes a few steps back and forth on the right while belching the letters B-U-R-P. Stay to the far left and jump while shooting to destroy the letters. When the letters aren’t coming out, shoot his belly, then prepare for him to reach out his arm and grab you. The only part you have to avoid is his hand, so move to the right quickly and jump away from his hand. Then move back to the left and repeat the pattern. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What videogame would be complete without slippery ice. All three stages of Stage 6 are icy but the enemies are familiar. If you begin to slide out of control, jump straight up and you’ll stop skidding when you land. Also, if you start sliding backwards down a hill, try jumping rapidly up to avoid sliding. On Stage 6-2, keep your eyes peeled on hard to see platforms. Near the beginning, after you reach the far left side, jump up to the platform moving from left to right, then look for and jump on a platform moving up in the waterfall. The exit is a few hops to the left. The boss at the end of Stage 6-3 is Crystal Mammoth. After thawing out, he shoots a spinning tusk at your feet, then around and back over your head to return to the mammoth. Rapidly fire your aim at the stomach of the mammoth while avoiding the spinning tusk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Directly above the starting point in Stage 7-1 is an extra life. Be sure not to miss it before you swing on the vine. If you die, you have to start all over but you can get the extra life each time. Stage 7-2 has a few tricky moving and collapsing platforms. While riding on the platforms, be ready to fight approaching enemies. After riding under the arrow of spikes, there are various weapons you can obtain by jumping to smash the blocks, then falling through to get the weapon. Below the pacing lizard is a triple shot and to the right is fire. Choose which weapon you want then move to the center and continue to smash blocks till you find the exit. The boss of Stage 7 is Bashtar. He seems to be missing some vital parts, but he still has his heart, two fists, and two feet. He’ll stomp and punch his way to the left, so at some point you’ll have to jump to the right over his feet and through the fists. Your main target is his heart, which is the only way to cause damage to him. If you fire rapidly enough you can destroy him without having to jump to the right but the timing is critical so move quickly and blast away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jello (we believe it’s lime flavored) becomes an obstacle on this level. Keep jumping to avoid sinking into it (Why don’t he just eat it? There is always room for Jello.) You’ll always find yourself in the dark but shooting will light up the room. A winged demon will attack from above during 8-1. Usually the best offense is to shoot diagonally or straight up since he can block straight ahead shots with his spear. From the swinging chain on Stage 8-2, jump to the right and rapidly jump while holding right to climb up and away from the spikes, which are just below the surface of protective Jello. Dr. Andrew Stark is the boss for this stage, and you’ll have to survive him in order to continue to Stage 9, where he’ll reappear. This isn’t going to be easy! He appears in a random spot, where you can shoot and take away his energy, but after a few seconds he’ll disappear, only to reappear in a random spot. The most dangerous pattern is the fireballs, which you must shoot or avoid. Once the fireballs appear, stand still and shoot in front of you then shoot up. You should be able to shoot every fireball but it won’t work as well if you are jumping at the same time the fireballs appear. In this case you should fire rapidly and prepare to jump away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 9(NOTE: MUST BE IN NORMAL OR HARD MODE TO REACH LEVEL 9) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yikes! New enemies! The first is a bouncing monkey head that shoots flames from its mouth. Stand back to avoid the flames and rapidly fire. On Stage 9-2 you must ride a skateboard, then jump to each skateboard that appears. Keep your eyes peeled, timing jump carefully. The pattern for Dr. Andrew Stark at the end of 9-3 is the same as 8-3. This time he has a longer life bar, meaning this will be a longer battle. If you can, grab your triple shot before you reach the exit. It’s much easier to shoot the fireballs with it. When you defeat him, you’ll have to fight Membrane. Jump and blast him rapidly as you can, then when he moves towards you, go as far left as possible and jump to avoid the spikes he drops. He also drops food and weapons to give you a fighting chance, but it’s still a battle. The triple shot is the best weapon, because you can destroy the hands he fires much easier. Upon defeating him, you’ll receive a long animation with names for all the enemies and programmer credits and a special "See you again message"
