Cannon Fodder by Virgin Author: DJ Tigresa and MC Pantera Email: djtigresa@classicgaming.com, mcpantera@classicgaming.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “WAR! Never been so much fun!” And never been so incredibly frustrating, either. This conversion of a popular British computer game—best described as a combination of Lemmings and Syndicate—doesn’t just flirt with the line between challenge and frustration; it runs across the line, gives you the finger, and laughs in your face. Fortunately, when we weren’t screaming our guts out, we managed to write down strategies and walkthroughs for every last bleedin’ one of Cannon Fodder’s 70+ missions. Be warned, dear reader: even with this guide at your side, you still need a bountiful supply of patience, luck, and hand-eye coordination. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Basic Strategies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Cannon Fodder manual doesn’t mention this, but soldiers with higher ranks can move faster and shoot farther than their lower-ranked brethren. They can also lob grenades farther. Instead of pressing the OPTION button to switch between grenades and rockets, just press the A but ton.To see the overview map, press the “, 0, or # button on the keypad. The most important tactic is to keep moving. If you stand still, you make yourself a pathetically easy target. Move it, move it, move it! Don’t be afraid to surrender if you’re running low on soldiers or grenades. It’s better to surrender and save a few guys than to waste a whole troop when there’s no chance of victory. In a similar vein, use the fewest soldiers possible during a mission to minimize your casualties. Save your grenades and rockets for enemy buildings, which are usually the primary objec tives in a mission. Don’t waste your precious explosives on wimpy grunts. The best way to cross a river is to split your sol diers into two groups. Send one group across the river while the other group provides cover fire. (Take control of the land-lubbing group to keep them from lobbing grenades.) When the first group makes it across, send the second one across to join them. When your soldiers are swimming in deep (dark blue) water, they can’t shoot, but if they’re wading in shallow (light blue) water, they can. Try this trick when you have to swim across deep water: place your crosshairs on the offending enemy target and press B and C. The moment your soldier reaches shallow water, he fires at the target. There are three types of booby traps: mines, spears, and trip wires. Mines leave a bulge in the ground and can be shot to blow them up.A spear can’t be seen and doesn’t go off until a soldier walks onto it and gets a sharp spike thrust into his naughty bits. If you walk very carefully near a spear, you can trigger it without killing the soldier. Trip wires are very visible black strands that can be shot to blow them up. When you’re inside a vehicle and click on a point, the vehicle spends half the distance accelerating to maximum speed and the other half slowing down. Unless you need to steer around an object in the way, click far away from the vehicle to make it move faster. Grunts are the stupidest enemies in Gannon Fodder, armed with machine guns and grenades. Don’t charge directly at a grunt; instead, run diagonally past him. The grunt fires behind you while you run into range and mow him down with a quick burst. Snipers are armed with explosive bazookas, and should be attacked in exactly the opposite way as grunts. Send a single soldier, without grenades or rockets, running directly at a sniper. The sniper will miss your soldier as long as he keeps moving. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walkthrough ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== Mission 1: The Sensible Initiation =============================================================================== For the love of God, you don’t need help with this one, do you?! Run around the right side of the woods and shoot the three grunts! =============================================================================== Mission 2: Onward Virgin Soldiers =============================================================================== PHASE 1: BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER PIE Move clockwise around the map, killing groups of two and three grunts as you encounter them. Get in some practice with river crossings before you finish off all the grunts. PHASE 2: TRASH ENEMY HQ Stay on one side of the river, because it’s narrow enough that you can shoot grunts on both sides without needing to swim across. Make your way to the hut in the southeast corner of the map and grab the grenades on the right side of the hut. (Don’t fire your guns near the grenades— one stray bullet sets them off and ends the mis sion real quick.) With the grenades in your hot little hands, walk away and to one side of the hut, and lob a grenade at it. When the hut explodes, the roof blows off randomly, and the door blows down and left; don’t get hit by either piece of shrapnel. =============================================================================== Mission 3: Antarctic Adventure =============================================================================== From the start, walk east past the first hut and jump off the cliff. Walk south and pick up the four boxes of grenades next to the hut. Now move around the map and use one grenade each to destroy all four huts. Kill any remaining grunts to complete the mission. =============================================================================== Mission 4: Super Smashing Namtastic =============================================================================== PHASE 1: BEACHY HEAD Walk to the beach in the northwest corner and swim across the river. Pick up the grenades and destroy the hut. Walk to the hut in the southwest corner and destroy it. Swim over to the jetty and destroy the hut in the southeast corner. You’ll encounter heavy grunt resistance as you move to the final hut in the northeast corner, so you might want to use a grenade or two to thin ‘em out. (Make sure to save one for the hut itself.) PHASE 2: PIER PRESSURE Quickly kill the grunts approaching you, then walk to the end of the eastern pier and lob a grenade at the hut to destroy it. Eliminate any remaining grunts to finish the phase. PHASE 3: VILLAGE PEOPLE From the start, walk southwest to the tunnel entrance—it’s north of the four-hut village. Leave two or three soldiers to guard the hole, but not with grenades. (Computer-controlled soldiers tend to blow themselves up with grenades when enemy soldiers get close to them.) Take the grenade-equipped troop down to the village and blow up the huts. (There’s a grenade crate next to the south hut.) Walk to the north east corner of the map to fmd two grenade crates that you don’t need, then go to the south east corner to destroy the final hut. Watch out for the patch of quicksand on the west side of the hut. PHASE 4: QUICKSAND Form a troop of two soldiers without grenades and walk up to the quicksand patch in the northwest corner of the map. Look for a trip wire on the ground. Shoot it from a distance to trigger it, then pick up the grenades to the east of the quicksand. Now head for the hut in the southwest corner, shooting grunts all the while. (Don’t miss the ones in the southeast corner.) Don’t try to collect the rockets in the quicksand near the hut; your soldiers will sink before they get across. =============================================================================== Mission 5: Those Vicious Vikings =============================================================================== PHASE 1: THE VALLEY OF ICE From the start, walk west to the first hut. Walk into the shallow, light blue water and lob a grenade across the river to destroy it. Continue west to the next two huts and pick up the grenades and rockets. Use grenades to destroy the huts.WaIk west to the next two huts, switch to rockets, and use one to destroy the north hut. Shoot at the grenade crate to blow up it and the south hut. Take a single soldier and run to the west to kill the bazooka-armed snipers. If you keep moving, the snipers will keep missing, and you can gun them all down without getting killed. PHASE 2: A NICE SET OF BAZOOKAS Destroy the hut south of where you start the phase, then walk to the southeast corner of the map. Destroy the hut and collect the rocket barrels (12 rockets in all).Walk west without stopping and kill the sniper.Walk north and kill the next sniper before he fires.WaIk to the north end of the map, kill the sniper, and destroy the hut with a grenade. Switch back to rockets, swim west across the water, and kill the sniper. Go west to take out two more snipers.Walk south across the ice bridge and kill the sniper next to the hole. Continue to the south west corner to destroy the hut, kill the sniper, and fmish the phase. PHASE 3: MY BEAUTIFUL SKIDU Blow up the first hut and split up into two groups. (Collect the nearby rockets before or after destroying the hut.) Send one group down the east side of the map to the skidu, shooting a sniper along the way. There’s another sniper on the west side of the hut; trick him into destroy ing the hut and then shoot him. There are two snipers on the west side of the river, so move quickly and use rockets to take them both out. Swim across the river and shoot any soldiers as soon as you pop out of the water. Run around the south trees and then go north to the hut. Blow it up to complete the mission. =============================================================================== Mission 6: Westward Ho =============================================================================== PHASE 1: THE GRAND CANYON Use a grenade on the fence near the start.Walk to the edge of the canyon and use a rocket to destroy the hut. (It might take two shots, depending on whether the rocket clears the fence. When the door flies off, you’ve destroyed the hut.) Walk to the northeast corner of the map, grenade the hut, and shoot the enemy soldiers. Walk across the bridge, and make sure to avoid the holes or your soldiers plunge to their deaths. Once you cross the bridge, walk east to the edge of the map, then walk south to the road. Shoot at the grenades next to the southeast hut to destroy it. If the door doesn’t kill the sniper, walk around the hut and shoot him. Run west along the road and kill the sniper in the southwest corner, then get rid of the grunts in the gully to finish the phase. PHASE 2: TRIGGER HAPPY Walk down to the cliff and split into two groups.Walk one group west to the hut. Let the sniper blow it up and throw a grenade over the hut to kill him. Switch to the second group and walk south to the helipad. Blow open the fence and take the grenades. Walk south down the narrow path and shoot the sniper on the roof. Walk into the southeast corner of the map, blow up the hut, and take the grenades. Now walk to the three buildings on the west side and blow up the door to finish the mission. =============================================================================== Mission 7: Greenland Redblood =============================================================================== PHASE 1: THE SLIPPERY STAIRWAY Split off a single soldier (without grenades or rockets) and use him to kill the four snipers in the south half of the map. Make sure to keep moving so that the snipers can’t draw a bead on you. Leave the soldier near the second hut from the bottom of the map and walk to him with the other soldiers, destroying the huts as you go. Switch to rockets and swim across the right side of the river, shooting the sniper as soon as you reach the other side. Walk up the icy path and destroy the next two huts. Kill the sniper at the north end of the map with a rocket and cross the river in the shallow water so you can shoot as you move. Destroy the fmal hut and pick up the grenades. To finish the phase, shoot the soldiers in the pool in the southwest corner of the map. PHASE 2: RETURN TO REYKJAVIK Walk south through the gap in the trees, destroying the first igloo with a grenade. Destroy the igloo in the southwest corner of the map and walk toward the island in the middle of the map. Stop near the corner and wait for one of the snipers to blow himself up, then take out the rest of the bad guys. Walk to the southeast corner and kill the soldiers, then work your way up the east side of the map, destroying the hut and the igloos. Kifi the remaining soldiers in the center lake to finish the phase. PHASE 3: EVIL KNIEVEL Send one soldier north to kill the sniper, then regroup the soldiers and board the skidu. Make sure you hit the ramps straight, or you’ll fly into the trees for a not..so-graceful landing. You can run over the enemy snipers along the route without getting out of the skidu. After you clear the last ramp, get out of the skidu and split into two groups. Use the first group to kill the three snipers on the west side of the river and then regroup.Walk to the north edge of the map and swim across the river. Wait for the civilian Eskimo to move away from the buildings before you blow them up; if you kill the Eskimo, you lose. =============================================================================== Mission 8: Guerrilla WarFare =============================================================================== PHASE 1: HAVE A NICE TRIP Switch to rockets and walk toward the huts in the northwest corner. Hide in the trees near the bridge and shoot the nearby grunts, then kill the sniper below the huts with a rocket. You can also shoot the mine between the bridges to blow them up. (Watch out for the spike booby traps on the bridge!) Use rockets to destroy the huts.Walk to the northeast corner and kill the grunts to finish the phase. PHASE 2: BANG BANG YOU’RE DEAD Shoot the sniper and quickly hide between the wrecked huts. Use a single soldier to walk south and kill the two snipers with grenades or rockets.Take two soldiers and move them above the trees in the southeast corner. Move a single sol dier west and kill the two snipers.Take out two more snipers to the south and switch to the sol diers near the trees. Charge to the west and kill the sniper on the bunker, then grenade the sniper to the west. There’s one last sniper on the west bunker; take him out and you’ve eliminated the sniper men ace. Now move the two soldiers between the two south bunkers (to shoot emerging ene mies) and switch to either of the single soldiers. Swim out to the turret in the middle of the map and shoot all the nearby soldiers. Jump into the turret and start blasting the hell out of the enemy bunkers, along with any long-range soldiers headed your way. Don’t fire too close to the turret, or you blow yourself up—a rather embarrassing way to croak. Destroy all five bunkers to finish the phase. PHASE 3: DELIVERANCE There are three booby-trap spikes near the start. Stay pinned against the trees as you move to avoid getting skewered. Once you’ve cleared the traps, move through the maze until you reach the oil drum on the left side of the river. Split into two groups, giving all the grenades and rockets to one of them. Take the other group to a bush in the southeast corner to pick up a hidden power-up worth 50 (!) heat-seeking rockets. Return to the oil drum, but don’t regroup. Send a single soldier down the river with regular rockets to kill the snipers, then move to the native huts at the south end of the map and use rockets and grenades to destroy the enemy huts. (Aim for the doors of the huts to destroy them.) Your solo soldier is almost guaranteed to get killed, but if he takes out a few huts, it’s worth it. Switch to the second soldier and bring him in on the other side of the enemy village to destroy more huts. Once he’s dead, bring in the heat-seekers. Destroy the remaining huts, but don’t kill all the soldiers. Run through the path above the enemy huts to find a tree with a Supa Dupa Ranka Boosta (that’s what the manual calls it, I swear), which turns a soldier into a General. PHASE 4: JEEP JUMP Shoot the soldier popping Out of the hole, then grenade the hut over the trees and destroy the enemy jeep. Walk to the northeast corner and move the jeep away from the enemy hut, then destroy the hut. Send a single soldier south to kill the three snipers around the lower hut. (One of the snipers is across the river, so you need to use a rocket on him.) Leave the single soldier on the cliff and move the other three soldiers into the jeep. Make sure the soldiers are in one group! Drive the jeep off the cliff and into the river, then quickly climb out of the jeep before it sinks. Move south and use grenades on the hut and the sniper over the trees. Run past the turret to the west side of the map. Shoot the sniper, walk south, and blow up the enemy jeep with a grenade. Return to the turret and use it to blow up the enemy bunkers. =============================================================================== Mission 9: Great Scott Good Shot =============================================================================== PHASE 1: ROUND THE GARDEN There are two ways to approach this mission. My preferred method was to ignore the skidu and run around the map in a counterclockwise direction, using grenades to destroy the huts and using a rocket to destroy the enemy skidu. Then I returned to the skidu and used it to drive near the enemy turrets and trick them into blowing themselves up. The other way to com plete the phase is to drive around in the skidu, run over the enemy snipers, and trick the turrets into shooting the huts. (You’ll need to get Out eventually and finish the job.) PHASE 2: IN AT THE DEEP END Swim to the larger island in the northeast cor ner of the map. Pray that the enemy turrets don’t kill you before you reach the island; sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. Shoot a rocket at the first turret as soon as you touch land, then destroy the second turret and grab the rockets in the northeast corner. You can use the turret to blow up the bunkers and enemy turrets, or you can hide behind the bunker and blow up the turrets with grenades. Once the north half of the map is complete, swim to the island in the southwest corner and use grenades and rockets to destroy the remaining turrets. =============================================================================== Mission 10: One Gigantic Dust Bowl =============================================================================== PHASE 1: THE SQUARE DANCE Don’t go for the rockets near the northwest hut; there’s an enemy sniper in the middle of the map just waiting for you to get within range. Stick to the road and use grenades to destroy the enemy huts one at a time. (I found the easiest way was to hit the huts on the west side, then walk along the north side of the map and hit the huts on the east side.) There’s another sniper at the south end of the map for you to worry about. The helicopter isn’t armed, but drops off enemy sol diers; use a rocket to destroy the helicopter when it lands. PHASE 2: PENNY FOR THE GUY There’s an enemy turret firing at you from across the canyon. Hide behind one of the huts and use a small group of soldiers to destroy the huts with grenades. (You can also try to trick the turret into shooting the huts.) When you’re done, walk across the bridge—carefully, because it’s loaded with spikes —and use a grenade to destroy the turret below the hangar. Walk south and destroy the second turret to open the fence. Walk north and shoot the sniper, then blow through the fence. Destroy the north turret and take the rockets next to it.Wálk west to destroy the last turret and south to destroy the last hut. PHASE 3: TANKY IN THE MIDDLE Send two soldiers east to destroy the huts and the turret. Return to the other soldiers and climb into the jeep, Jump over the fence with the ramp. Ignore the enemy turret and tank and jump quickly to the north end of the map.Jump out of the jeep and grenade the two huts (with out killing the civilian) to complete the phase. PHASE 4: IF IT MOVES KILL IT Immediately rocket the sniper to the north and wait for the enemy tank to destroy the bunker for you. (If the tank kills itself before destroying the bunker, surrender the mission and restart without losing any soldiers.) Destroy the hut to the west and send two soldiers on a suicide run to destroy the north hut and finish the phase. (There’s a turret in the middle of the map, but getting to it is practically impossible.) PHASE 5: A GOOD HARD TANK There’s an enemy turret that blasts your unfor tunate soldiers the moment the mission begins. Destroy the turret and send what’s left of your squad up the west side of the map.. Use grenades and rockets to destroy the huts and turrets as you go. Climb into the tank in the northwest corner of the map and use it to destroy the rest of the huts, along with the turret on the east side of the map. =============================================================================== Mission 11: Jungle Bloody Jungle =============================================================================== PHASE 1: LORD OF THE FLIES Walk to the west, past the quicksand, until you reach the native hut. You’re attacked by four soldiers near the hut. Mow them down and grenade the hut for a good laugh. Walk to the southwest corner (shooting an enemy soldier in the narrow path) and walk down to the riverbank. Walk straight to the east and switch to rockets. Blow up the next native hut and the door of the green building to finish the phase. PHASE 2: WHAT A BIG CHOPPER The enemy helicopter in this phase is brutal, and kills your soldiers very quickly if they’re in the open. The best strategy I’ve found is to take all four soldiers down the west side of the map. Use grenades or rockets to destroy the two turrets. Move the four soldiers into the trees above the bunker and split into two groups. Send one group to the tank in the southwest corner. (When the helicopter lands at the pad near the bunker, blow it up with a rocket.) As soon as you enter the tank, destroy the turret and then the bunker. There are two options at this point. Option #1: Switch to the non-tank sol diers, run east, and destroy the turrets on foot. Option #2: Drive east in the tank and destroy the turrets, then drive across the bridge and destroy the enemy tank. (Don’t destroy the native hut or you fail the mission.) Use the tank to blow up the wall of the native prison, and then wait for the native to stumble his way home. PHASE 3: DONKEYTASTIC I humbly suggest that you destroy the enemy chopper at the start of the phase. Walk west along the top of the map until you reach the landing pad (white X). Wait for the helicopter to land and quickly destroy it with a rocket. The rest of the phase is a simple matter of exploring and destroying the turrets and huts. There’s a helicopter in the northeast area of the map that you can use to fly around and locate everything. =============================================================================== Mission 12: Chiller Thriller Killer =============================================================================== PHASE 1: AN ICICLE MADE FOR TWO Switch to rockets and run east to the icy peninsula, where you can just see an enemy skidu at the top and an enemy turret on the right side of the screen. Hit them both quickly with rockets and make a beeline for the tank in the southeast corner. If the enemy helicopter starts attacking you before you reach the tank, hit the OPTION button and restart the phase. Once you’re in the tank, the helicopter can’t hurt you. Drive north and destroy the three bunkers to finish the phase. PHASE 2: TANK YOU VERY MUCH Quickly get into the tank and destroy every thing on the south side of the map. There are two turrets and an enemy tank to worry about; get rid of them first and then take out the bunkers. Make sure to kill the seal on the shore; it’s an explosive-filled decoy. When everything’s destroyed, get out of the tank and send one soldier across to the north. When your soldier gets close to the path, the sniper destroys the wooden wall. Kill everyone the moment you step onto the path, sending bullets in all directions. (You might want to use the first soldier to destroy the hut, and the sec ond soldier to kill the soldiers.) PHASE 3: DEATH AND GLORY Walk north and destroy the first two turrets with grenades. Run to the east and use grenade to blow up the row of mines, which destroys the turret at the north end of the row. Get into the helicopter to the east of the mines and fly to the southwest corner. Land in the clearing, take Out the soldiers, and climb into the tank. Use it to destroy the three bunkers, but watch out not to get caught in the explosions. Now swim across to the east side of the map and walk to the southeast corner, shooting the numerous soldiers in the river. Destroy the hut and the turret north of the hut. PHASE 4: NORTH FACE OF THE EIGER There are no less than five turrets on the south side of the map; take them out with grenades and rockets. (Here’s something to try: swim across to the hut and let the turret destroy it for you.The hut door flies off and destroys the turret, saving you two grenades.) When all the turrets are gone, climb into the chopper and fly to the northeast corner. Land the helicopter and move to the west. Grenade the turret in the northwest corner and climb into the tank. Destroy the two bunkers and climb out again. Now work your way along the icy “steps” and shoot everyone in your path, including a few snipers. PHASE 5: RESCUE EL PRESIDENTE At the start of the level, switch to rockets and immediately destroy the turrets in the north west and southwest corners, Walk to the north edge of the map and swim across. Before you can rescue the hostage, you have to destroy the two turrets to the southwest, then kill all the enemy soldiers without hitting the hostage. (There’s a turret in the trees that usually destroys itself.) You should be able to lob a grenade and destroy the hut from the other side of the trees. Send a soldier with at least one rocket down the west side of the map, avoiding the tank in the southeast corner. Don’t get the helicopter, but walk southeast and destroy the turret with a rocket. Now use the helicopter to pick up the hostage and carry him to the Red Cross tent in the southwest corner. PHASE 6: CHILL OUT ICEMAN It’s crucial to destroy the enemy helicopter before it takes off. If it gets into the air, surrender and try again. At the start of the phase, form a group of two or three soldiers and give them all the weapons. Restart the phase if they get killed. (This prevents plenty of unnecessary deaths.) Walk to the east edge of the island and use a rocket to destroy the turret on the bunker. Swim across to the bunker and run to the island in the southeast corner. Destroy the helicopter first, then destroy the turrets on the other bunkers. There are two ways to finish the phase .The non-cheating way is to move one soldier onto each of the three pressure pads on the map (north edge, northeast corner, and southeast corner). This lowers the helicopter on the roof of the factory. Get into the chopper, fly up to the factory roof, and use the turret to destroy the bunkers. The cheating way is to simply get into the turret from the right side of the factory (yes, this is a bug). You have to destroy the factory along with the bunkers, so shoot the factory door until it blows off. =============================================================================== Mission 13: Moors Murderers =============================================================================== Starting with this mission, you won’t always be able to destroy enemy turrets with rockets. Most times, you can only destroy them with another turret or a tank. Walk east immediately and swim across the river. Move below the bunker and trick the turret into shooting at you.The turret destroys the bunker, then blows itself up. Swim across to the turret north west of the bunker and immediately shoot at the jeep before it starts moving. Get out of the turret and destroy the hut to the west. Split up the team and send a soldier south to kill the sniper. Get into the turret and destroy the final enemy turret with it. =============================================================================== Mission 14: Bomb Alley =============================================================================== PHASE 1: IT’S ALL MINE The strategy for this phase is simple enough. Run like hell to the east until you reach the bridge, run south across it, and run west to the helicopter (watch out for the mines near the chopper). There are two turrets near the bridge that you can destroy with rockets or grenades, but I found it easier to ignore them and scam per across the bridge before they started shoot ing. The helicopter is armed with an unlimited number of heat-seeking rockets, so make sure to laugh crazily as you destroy everything in sight. PHASE 2: SANDY CRACK Get into the jeep and prepare to have a little fun with the enemy helicopter. What you want to do is drive around each enemy turret until it blows itself up or gets blown up by the helicopter. The tricky part, of course, is making sure you don’t get caught in the explosion. You can also get the helicopter to destroy the huts the same way as the tur rets. After about half a minute, the chopper lands in the southwest corner. Drive down there and destroy it on the ground, then mop up the remaining huts. PHASE 3: AIRLIFT Remember to use only one soldier on this mission so that you don’t suffer needless deaths if your chopper is shot down (hey, it could hap pen). There’s no safe spot on the map where you can land the helicopter without being killed by a turret, unless you set down behind a hut. Here’s our inelegant solution: land the heli copter close to, and behind, each hut, then quickly take off again. The nearest turret takes a shot at you and destroys the hut instead. When all three huts are destroyed, you can work on freeing the hostages. (The hostages in this phase can’t be killed by bullets or explosions, making your task a little easier.) Use the helicopter to crush the remaining soldiers by landing on them. You don’t have to touch the ground; just get low enough to squoosh the grunts. Lead the hostages into the southeast corner and land behind the hut to let them climb inside. Fly to the tent on the south edge of the map and let ‘em out. =============================================================================== Mission 15: Get Orfi Moi Land =============================================================================== PHASE 1: SHEEP DIP Head north and walk through the hole in the hedge, then walk south to the chopper. Keep a healthy distance from the farmer; he can shoot you, but you can’t shoot him without failing the mission for your psychotic civilian-killing behavior. Fly over to the clearing in the trees on the east edge of the map. Send one soldier north into the tank (watch out for a spike). Drive south down the screen, shooting three turrets and a bunker. If you don’t complete the mission at this point, there are a few soldiers in the middle of the map just waiting to be terminated. PHASE 2: CHOCS AWAY CHAPPIES Swim to the east and shoot the sniper in the trees and the sheep near the bridge (which explodes if you get close). Cross the bridge and walk north to destroy the hut. Continue north and kill the sniper with a grenade over the trees before climbing into the chopper. Fly over to the sniper-infested clearing on the west side of the map and kill the bad boys with bombs before landing. The grunts fire so rapidly that you’re guaranteed to suffer a few losses before you manage to get into the turret and blow the three bunkers to bloody hell. PHASE 3: A BRIDGE TOO FAR Boogie into the chopper and land between the houses in the southwest corner. Leave two sol diers on the ground and send the rest of them back into the air, safe from danger. Walk north into turret, fire at the enemy turret, and run out of the turret before it’s destroyed by return fire. (Yes, this is a tricky maneuver.) Walk east to the bunker and use the turret to destroy it. Cross over the land bridge and walk east. Stand on the left side of the bridge. The jeep won’t be able to get you, but you can kill it with a well-placed grenade. Heh, heh. All that’s left to destroy now are the hut to the south and the tank to the north. You can get the tank with either of the nearby turrets. If it’s out of position, lure it into range with the chopper. You can use your soldiers or the helicopter to kill the remaining soldiers. =============================================================================== Mission 16: Going Underground =============================================================================== PHASE 1: ETON RIFLES Walk west and kill the two snipers. Walk east and grenade the doors in the walls. Go into the left room to get the extra grenades, then go into the right room to kill the sniper and blow up the mines. Blow up the door and walk to the southeast corner, then move west to kill several more snipers on the path. Head for the ladder in the northwest corner. Climb it and move east to a room teeming with enemy grunts. Destroy the door and kill everyone in a lovely display of destructive technology. PHASE 2: SEWERS CANAL Move west through the slop, climb the ladder, and blow the door. On the west edge of the map is a Supa Dupa Ranka Boosta (man, do I feel dorky typing that) behind a blast wall. To get through a blast wall, you need to hit it with four grenades and/or rockets so that it retracts into the floor. Oh, by the way, to finish the phase, make your way to the turret on the east edge of the map and blow up the steel doors. =============================================================================== Mission 17: The Moor The Merrier =============================================================================== Blow off the door of the house next to you, then move east across the river. Walk east along the road to the barricade. Send one soldier into the southeast corner to kill the sniper, then get everyone into the tank. Blast the barricade and drive north along the road, destroying the tur ret, house, and hut. When all the enemies have been snuffed, the hostage stumbles into the tank. Drive to the bridge and make sure only one soldier and the hostage are inside. Cross the bridge and kill the turret on the other side. (If the turret hits the tank, you only lose one sol dier because they’re all safely on the bridge.) Now walk across the land bridge in the south west corner, kill the sniper, and escort the hostage into the tent. =============================================================================== Mission 18: Underpants Electric =============================================================================== PHASE 1: TAKE YOUR PARTNERS Send a single soldier west to the turret and destroy the enemy turret and the steel door. Walk south and open up the blast walls with four grenades or rockets. You’re now in the room with the first hostage. Pick up the weapon refill and lead the hostage back to the starting point. Walk south into the slime, where the second hostage is wandering about. Blow through the next set of blast walls and then blow through the door. Send one soldier into the next room, shooting his way to the turret. Destroy the doors at the top and bottom of the room. Run into the south room and jump into the next turret to destroy the final door. Now bring in the extremely dense hostages and lead them to the tent. PHASE 2: THE SCROUNGERS While you will undoubtedly be tempted to shoot gaping holes in the bottle-tossing drunks, you would be silly to do so, especially since you’d fail the mission instantly. Instead, send one or two soldiers running up the right side of the screen and up the stairs. (You can use the jeep for extra safety from the bottles, but then you’d be a little paranoid.) Thin out the grunts with a few grenades before hopping into the turret and destroying the three bunkers. PHASE 3: PLENTY OF ROOM Walk two doors east, destroy the jeep with a grenade, and blow through the door. Walk into the jeep room, blast the east door, and walk west to the enemy turret. The mentally challenged turret opera tor tries to shoot you through the wall and kills himself instead. Return to the jeep room and blow through the west door into the turret room, From here, blast the east door and get into the chopper. Use the chopper to fly around and pick up the three hostages while dealing death upon the enemy. Deliver the hostages to the tent on the north edge of the map to finish the phase. PHASE 4: FRANZ KLAMMER Swim west across the water, blow up the door, and put one soldier into the jeep. Drive the jeep at full speed into the ramp to leap across the slime. Now bob and weave through the turrets and walls, jumping the ramp at the east end of the map. Run over the guards, stop the jeep just long enough for the stunned hostage to get in, and drive like a madman to the tent on the west side of the map. Sweet! PHASE 5: THE DOORS Jump into the jeep and taunt the enemy tanks into following you to the bottom of the map. Once they’ve followed you, drive to the north west corner and park in front of the fourth door from the left. (It’s the first door to the right of the troop door.) Grenade your way through the door, then through the blast wall behind it. It’s a missile-firing chopper! Life is good! =============================================================================== Mission 19: Diablo Downstairs =============================================================================== You need at least three soldiers to finish the mission, so if anyone gets killed, raise the white flag and try again.Walk up to the building on the north edge of the map and stand on the right side. Send two soldiers to the east and the pile of junk, where they should lob a grenade over the mess to destroy the jeep on the other side. (If you miss with the grenade, the jeep shoots you or leaps over the junk to crush you.) Send the two soldiers down to the wall on the east edge of the map. Dodge the grenades from the enemy chopper and wait for it to land in the southeast corner. Walk south (against the wall, to avoid the enemy turret) and rocket the chopper when it lands. Return to the wall and stand on the pressure pad. Switch to the other soldier group and split off a single soldier to stand on the second pressure pad. Take your remaining brave fools to the southwest corner via the middle building. Avoid the enemy turrets and plant your footsies on the third pressure pad to bring the chopper over to you. Climb inside and hurt, maim, kill. =============================================================================== Mission 20: Moors The Pity =============================================================================== PHASE 1: TANK TOP Destroy the hut near your starting point and send a single soldier to blow up the huts on the west and south sides of the map. Climb into the tank in the middle of the map, drive across the bridge, and destroy everything on the east side of the river, along with the hut near the south east corner. Next! PHASE 2: TANKTASTIC Stash the soldiers behind the house and send one brave fool into the tank. Keep the tank in constant motion as you drive around the map, blowing up tanks, turrets, and buildings (only the ones with the doors, but you probably knew that). Destroy the tanks and turrets before the buildings, since they can blow you up real good. Make sure you have a direct line of fire before you shoot, or you might blow yourself up (which is rather demoralizing). After you’ve taken care of business, switch to the remaining soldiers and use them to grenade the hedged-in building in the middle of the map. Walk down to the river, swim across, and destroy the huts in the southeast and southwest corners. Victory is yours, and all that. PHASE 3: THE GREAT ESCAPE Move a single soldier into the chopper and take to the skies. Bomb the hut to the west and then fly to the island in the northeast corner, Wait for the enemy chopper to land and blow it up. Or— and this is kinda tricky—you can get the enemy chopper to follow you around the map, shoot at you, and destroy the enemy tank and turrets for you. This is time-consuming, but very satisfying. With the enemy chopper destroyed, fly to the northwest corner and get into the tank. Leave the hostage in his pen, but clear the way for him by destroying the barricades. If you didn’t use the enemy chopper, you need to destroy the turrets and enemy tank along with the barricades. The best way of destroying the turret near the hostage house is to drive into the field near the hut and shoot it from across the water. When everyone and everything is dead, drive back to the hostage and blow up the barricade. Now you get to wait for a grueling length of time as the seemingly drunk prisoner slowly stumbles along the road to his house. PHASE 4: WHOOPEEE Put your least favorite soldier into the jeep and drive south to the turret, executing a hit-and-run on the sniper along the way. Jump into the turret and shoot the enemy turret on the far bank, then the bunker. Hop out and send all your soldiers to the chopper in the southeast corner of the map—not an easy trek with the enemy bunkers nearby. Get into the air and proceed to shoot everything that moves and everything that doesn’t. =============================================================================== Mission 21: Explore My Hole =============================================================================== There are many words we could use to describe this mission, but all of them are filthy, so we’ll just stick to the G-rated label of “very, very difficult.” When we finally completed it on my six billionth attempt, we didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or see how far we could throw the damn cartridge. But we digress. From the start, move right to avoid the mine, and then prepare for the mother of all mad dashes. KEEP FIRING and KEEP MOVING as you walk around the wall, climb up the ladder, and hop into the turret. Click on distant points so you can concentrate on shooting the hordes of enemy grunts. Cover the doors as you walk past them. Watch your back. When (and if) you get into the turret, don’t fire too close and blow yourself up. =============================================================================== Mission 22: Desert Disaster =============================================================================== PHASE 1: ROCKET MAN Switch to rockets and shoot the turret directly across from you. Get into the chopper, destroy every thing, and rescue the hostages.A blessedly easy phase. PHASE 2: RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS Immediately toss a grenade at the fence to blow it up, then switch to rockets and shoot down the chopper before it gets airborne. If it does, surrender and try again. Stay behind the building and wait for the sniper to shoot. He always hits the building and is usually killed by the door. Use your last grenade to destroy the west hut and pick up the grenade crate in the northwest corner. Now here’s the tough part: You have to work your way down the right side of the screen while slaughtering the enemy grunts that charge at you literally nonstop. Ignore the extra grenades near the bunker and watch out for the mine. Your ultimate goal is to grab the missile power-ups in the southeast corner and use them to destroy the huts and bunkers. Much easier written than done. Don’t bother moving down the middle of the screen, since you’ll just be killed by the enemy turret. PHASE 3: AND THEY’RE OFF This phase is a neat little race against the enemy jeep at the bottom of the screen. Hop into the jeep, drive east a bit, and hop out to grenade the first fence. Drive at full speed and jump the sec ond fence by hitting the large rock. Continue driving to the third fence and use two grenades to destroy it. Drive east to the turret, get inside, and blow up the enemy jeep as it drives onto the screen. To use a catchphrase from the MTV sketch-comedy show The State: “Ah, yeah!” PHASE 4: GO FOR IT Jump into the chopper and pray to the deity of your choice that you get enough altitude before the incoming rockets explode. If you survive the first five seconds of the phase, you win. If not, try again.., and again.., and again... =============================================================================== Mission 23: Moors Et Mortem =============================================================================== PHASE 1: SHEEP LOVERS DELIGHT You need to run southeast to the turret, but the enemy grunts coming out of the bunker are nasty little muthas. There are two techniques you can use: run like hell along the left side of the bunker and hope you make it to the turret before the grunts start coming out, or walk the long way around the trees, staying as far away from the bunker as possible. Once inside the turret, shoot the bunker and barricades. Hop out of the turret and walk south to the chopper. Pile inside and fly east to the field with two enemy tanks. You can fool the tanks into shooting each other (very satisfying), or land in the north field and use the tank parked there. PHASE 2: IRELAND RECORDS Swim west to the island and shoot the grunts and sniper. Send a single soldier southwest to the turret. Shoot the enemy turret and hop out before you’re wasted by return fire. Now board the chopper in the southwest corner. Take out the turret in the northwest corner and the bunker in the northeast corner. The enemy chopper lands in the southeast corner at regu lar intervals, just begging to be shot. PHASE 3: GAWD HELP ME Quickly switch to rockets and destroy the enemy choppers to the west and north before they take off. If one of them manages to get off the ground, you can surrender and try again, or get into the chopper and destroy the enemy when he lands. (Watch out for the booby- trapped sheep on the island.) PHASE 4: CHOPPER CRAZY Walk south to the first chopper, which is guard ed by a sniper. Get in and fly northwest to the second chopper, with a sniper hiding in the trees nearby. Kill him, get in the chopper, and let the mass destruction begin. Not to be rude, but if you don’t finish this phase on the first go, you truly suck. PHASE 5: STOP THE PIGEON Send a single soldier to the chopper in the northeast corner. Watch out for the mines and several spike traps on the island. Climb aboard and fly to the island in the southwest corner, where you might be able to destroy both enemy choppers on the ground. Destroy the turrets (one of them in the northwest corner) to finish the phase. If there’s only one enemy chopper left, and you can’t shoot it down, become a kamikaze and crash into the sucker. =============================================================================== Mission 24: Bomb The Base =============================================================================== PHASE 1: SAVE THAT SCUMBAG Walk to the southeast corner and move one soldier into the tank. Drive through the narrow corridor and destroy all eight turrets. (We found it easiest to destroy the middle one first, then the ones around the edges of the map.) Keep moving at all times or you’re dog meat. PHASE 2: ONE MAN THREE CHOPPERS There are three choppers in this phase, but only the one in the northeast corner is armed with weapon, so that’s the one you want. Kill the soldiers that attack at the start of the phase and walk up to the northeast corner. Watch your rear and throw grenades over the walls to kill snipers before they have a chance to shoot. Climb into the chopper. Blow everything up real good. PHASE 3: A WATERY GRAVE Move a solo soldier into the chopper, leaving the grenades with the others. Fly north to the sniper and the mines should detonate, killing the sniper in a blaze of glory. If you’re a lucky beaver, one of the grunts throws a grenade at you and destroys one (or both) of the doors. If you’re not lucky, send your soldiers north and throw grenades at the doors to destroy them and kill the grunts. If you run out of grenades, squash the grunts with the chopper. PHASE 4: SYSTEM OFF Run into the northeast corner and move a sol dier into the chopper. Your first task is to destroy the four turrets in the center of the map in a single pass. If you don’t get them all imme diately, the survivors launch homing missiles at you. The only way to avoid the missiles is to keep moving and hope they eventually crash into something else. Destroy the computer dome (keep shooting until it’s completely broken), doors, consoles, and everything else. Check the corners of the map occasionally and shoot the enemy chop pers if they’re on the ground. (You can also hit them in the air.) PHASE 5: STICK EM UP COD BREATH In the last phase, the homing missiles were annoying, but in this phase, they’re deadly. If you get one on your tail, surrender and try again. Swim south across the muck and put one sol dier into the jeep. Buzz past the two turrets and jump into the helicopter to the west. Blast the turrets, then fly very slowly down the screen until you can just see the next enemy turret. Fire a few missiles at it and fly north before it returns fire. Repeat this sneaky tactic for the next two turrets. There’s a fourth turret in the southwest corner that doesn’t fire missiles, so attack it without fear. Once all the turrets are gone, blow everything up and pick up the enemy leader—he’s the freak with the red light in his noggin.Take him to the tent to complete the phase. PHASE 6: DONKEYDEATHTASTICELASTIC The last mission! It’s the last mission! Yee-ha! But don’t get too excited, because this mission has two cruel twists. The first twist is the time limit, shown by the “Time To Die” counter in the lower-left cor ner. (It’s equal to roughly three minutes of real time.) The second twist is that you can’t call up the overview map. Climb down the ladder and slog through the slime to the west.WhTen you reach the small ladder, split off a single soldier and give him all the grenades and rockets.Take this soldier through the groups of blast doors and around to the pressure pad.Along the way, trick the turret to the west into blowing itself up. Make sure the soldier uses all his explosives before you leave him on the pad, or he might foolishly kill himself with them later. Move the rest of the soldiers to the middle of the slime and split into two groups of two. Send the first group west to the ladder. Climb up, get in the turret and kill everything, and then stand on the pressure pad. Send the second group south as far as they can go, then west to the ladder. Stand on the bottom rung of the ladder and shoot the mine at the top of the ladder before you climb up. Stand on the third pressure pad to call over both your chopper and an enemy chopper. You now have a disturbingly small period of time to destroy all the doors (and the computer dome) while avoiding the enemy chopper and its heat-seeking missiles. Succeed at this and you win. So what’s your reward for playing through one of the most difficult video games of all time? A single still picture, followed by all-too-brief programmer credits. Hey, here’s an idea: how’s about all us Jaguar owners chip in a couple bucks each and purchase a hitman to kill the programmers for such an incredibly lame ending? =============================================================================== SECRETS =============================================================================== There is a supply-resurrection bug. If your troops are split into two or three groups, and one of the groups is killed, split off a single soldier without any grenades or rockets. The soldier magical ly receives the grenades and rockets of the troop that perished. For example, you have two groups, one with three soldiers and another with one soldier. Each group has four grenades and two rock ets. If the single soldier gets killed, split off another single soldier from the first group, without grenades or rockets. He receives four rockets and two grenades from the dead soldier!
