Doom by Id Software Author: DJ Tigresa and MC Pantera Email: djtigresa@classicgaming.com, mcpantera@classicgaming.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doom isn’t just a game; it’s a phenomenon. Released in late 1993,Doom quickly became one of the most popular computer games of all time, thanks to its wonderfully violent first-person-perspective game play and its multiplayer action. Id Software, the programmers of the original PC version, have expertly con verted Doom to the Jaguar, with most of its levels and graphics intact, and with two-player JagLink support. Grab a gun and join in the fun! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Automap ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Automap uses different colors and line patterns to indicate different areas in each level. Here’s what the different lines and colors mean: A single red line is a solid wall (which may have a hidden door). A double red line is a passageway into a previously sealed area. A single yellow line is an open area or passage. A double yellow line is a doorway (open or closed). A multiple yellow line is a hidden platform, stairway, or bridge (now raised). A single gray line is a platform, ledge, slime pool boundary, obstruction, or general area marker (whew!). A double gray line is a window or balcony. A multiple gray line is a stairway. A bluish-gray line (on the Computer Map only) is an unexplored area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are seven different enemies in Doom. From least to most deadly, they are: Zombieman. He carries around a single-shot rifle, and isn’t tough to kill; a single shot from any weapon will do the job. He drops an ammo clip when he dies. Shotgun Guy. He’s the same as a Zombieman, but armed with a Shotgun that he drops when you kill him. Pick it up for four Shotgun shells. Imp. This ugly mutha lobs deadly fireballs that cause health and armor damage. An Imp can take several Pistol shots (at least six), but a single Shotgun blast usually spills its brains.Approach it while zig-zagging to dodge the fireballs. Demon. This bad guy doesn’t have any long- range weapons, but he’s very well equipped for close combat. The Demon can take plenty of pun ishment (three Shotgun blasts or more than a dozen Pistol shots) and it runs like, er, a demon. Attack it from a distance for best results. Use a Rocket Launcher or Plasma Rifle for a quick kill. Lost Soul. This flying, flaming skull moves very quickly—so fast that it can dodge rockets. Wait until a Lost Soul gets close, then pound it with the Rocket Launcher or a few Shotgun blasts. Cacodemon. It’s an extremely large, extremely round floating eyeball that fires ball lightning. You need at least a Shotgun to take it down, but that’s small consolation; the Cacodemon can absorb six or seven Shotgun blasts, and about three dozen (!) Pistol shots. Use a Chain Gun to prevent the Cacodemon from spitting lightning at you, or hit it from long range with a Rocket Launcher (two hits) or a Plasma Rifle (20 rounds). Baron of Hell. So mean and nasty as to scare the bejeezus out of anyone unfortunate enough to face it in battle. If you’re going to have any chance against a Baron, you need a Rocket Launcher (five or six hits) or Plasma Rifle (50 rounds). If you have the BFG 9000, say a prayer of thanks, as one shot kills a Baron. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapons ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fist. Definitely your last resort, except for the 20-second period after you pick up a Berserk Pack and can kill anything with a few punches. Chain Saw. Very effective against the weaponless Demons. Cacodemons turn away from you when you chew into them with the Chain Saw, leaving them unable to hit you with lightning. Pistol. Useful against Zombiemen and Imps, but worthless against anyone tougher.Try putting 14 bul lets into a Demon, or 100 bullets into a Baron of Hell, and living to tell about it. Shotgun. Two or three Shotgun blasts kill most enemies, all the way up to the Lost Souls. Cacodemons and Barons require a little more firepower. The disadvantage is that there’s a long pause between shots as you reload. Try sliding left or right between shots to dodge enemy fire. In a battle against a large group of monster, you need a weapon with rapid-fire capability. Chain Gun. This weapon fires rapidly, which keeps opponents from attacking you, but each Chain Gun bullet only does the same amount of damage as a Pistol bullet. For example, you need to plug a Cacodemon with 50 shots to take it out. Use the Chain Gun against Zombiemen, Imps, and Demons. Rocket Launcher. The second-best long-range weapon (after the BFG 9000). A single rocket kills everything up to Lost Souls; two rockets kill a Cacodemon dead; and five rockets kill the Baron of Hell. Don’t use rockets at close range, because the explosions cause damage to your self along with the bad guys. Plasma Rifle. This bad boy pumps out plasma balls at a healthy pace. One plasma balls kills a Zombieman; two of ‘em take out an Imp; three shots lay waste to a Lost Soul; five or six bails eliminate a Demon; and at least 18 shots are needed to kill a Cacodemon. BFG 9000. A single shot from the BFG kills everything in the vicinity, including Barons of Hell. There’s a huge wait between shots while the BFG recharges, but it’s a sweet weapon to have. (For a little fun with profanity, try guessing what the “BFG” stands for.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fighting Strategies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Be sneaky! Ambush your target from behind, snipe at it from long range, hide behind pillars and walls, do whatever you can other than just running in and blasting away. Learn to strafe by holding the C button and moving Left or Right. This lets you slide and shoot simultaneously. Shoot the toxic barrels littered throughout the game and kill your enemies in the explosions. Boom! Try to trick your enemies into shooting each other. Run between enemies while they’re shooting, or lead one enemy into the line of fire of another. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Secret Areas ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every one of the 24 levels in Doom has at least one secret area. These secret areas are usually hidden doors which appear to be walls. In the early levels, secret doors are easy to spot because they’re a different color or texture than the rest of the wall. Hidden doors are opened just like regular doors. Our level walkthroughs expose as many of these secret areas as we’ve been able to locate (usually 100%, but not always). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 1: Hangar ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, walk to the open door on the left. Climb the stairs and take the Security Armor. Go back down the stairs, turn left, and walk down the corridor. Go through the door into the computer room. Go through the east door of the computer room onto a zig-zagging bridge over a slime pool. Cross the bridge and look for a lighter section of wall on the right side of the corridor. Move next to it and press the C button to enter a secret passage leading out to the courtyard. In the courtyard, run across the slime pool to take the Combat Armor. Return through the secret passage, turn right, and open the door. Pick up everything in the room and return to the zig-zag bridge. The tower with the Imp on it has lowered. Run across to the new passage and take the items, including a Shotgun. There’s a secret elevator in the southeast corner of the Shotgun area that only opens when you touch a tripwire near the north side of the zig zag bridge. Go to the tripwire—you can see and hear the secret elevator opening—and run to the secret elevator before it closes. Once inside the passage, pick up the items and exit by jumping down to the zig-zag bridge. Turn left and head for the Exit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 2: Plant ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, walk to the right of the stairs and look along the left wall for a secret door. (It’s gold-colored against the gray wall.) Inside the secret room, press the switch to open a secret door. Go up the stairs in the northeast corner. At the top is the secret door you opened with the switch. Walk out into the courtyard to pick up the Chain Gun and Soul Sphere. Return to the door, go to the top of the stairs, and turn right.Take the red Security Card and follow the stairs back to the start of the level. Go through the red Security Door on the west side of the area. Walk straight ahead and up the stairs that wind to the right. At the top of the stairs, to the left, is a small niche with a flashing light. Step into the niche to drop down into a tiny secret room. Shoot the Imp and the Zombiemen. You can see the Chain Saw, but you can’t get to it just yet. Go back up the niche. Walk north across the slime pool bridge and push the first wall panel on the left. The secret passage leads to an overhang where you can shoot at the enemies below. Jump down from the overhang, take the Combat Armor, and flip the switch to open doors on both sides. Both doors lead to the Exit, which you don’t want to use yet. Return to the red Security Door and walk up the north cor ridor. Flip the switch on the east side of the col umn sitting in the middle of the slime pool. This opens a secret door next to the red Security Doot Go through the secret door. Explore to the west until you fmd the green Security Armor. Shoot the wall behind the Armor to reveal a secret passage. At the top of the second flight of stairs, turn to the east and open another secret door. Go through the door to a room full of armor bonuses. Exit the room and continue up the stairs to the Chain Saw area. Push the switch in the northwest corner to lower the Chain Saw. Return down the stairs to the maze and work your way to the east side of the maze. Open the secret door between the white stripes on the far eastern wall. You’ve now found all the secret areas. Return to the Exit you found earlier and press the switch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 3: Toxin Refinery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, go through the northwest door and take a look at the Soul Sphere through the window. Go up the stairs, then turn left twice to find the switch.Throw it to open a secret door next to the Soul Sphere window. Go to the new door and climb the stairs to the computer room. Take the yellow Security Card and notice the flashing computer banks on the walls. These are secret passages, activated by a tripwire on the stairs leading into the room. Go back down the stairs, turn around, and run to the first elevator behind the second computer bank on the far left wall. (If the barrels slow you down, blow them up and try again.) When you make it into the secret passage, go down the stairs and flip the switch on the south side of the pedestal to lower the Soul Sphere. Go back down the stairs and run to the second secret passage, behind the computer bank on the back wall. In the secret room are Security Armor and a Rocket Launcher. Jump into the slime and follow it to the right, through the doorway. Flip the switch to lower a secret draw bridge at the start of the level. Open the light-brown wall section (it’S a secret door) and take the items, including a Chain Gun.Take the first elevator, then the second one with the green Security Armor. Walk up the stairs and turn left to explore the north section of the Refinery. Travel north to the oval bridge over the slime pit. Follow the bridge to the blue Key When you take the Key, the lights go out and monsters attack from a secret room behind you. Return to the start of the level. The drawbridge is down, but ignore it for the moment. Go around to the blue Security door. Go through the door and turn left at the slime pool fork. Walk straight ahead to raise the secret staircase. At the top of the stairs is the Exit. Return to the slime pool fork and take the right path. There’s a secret door next to the light in the wall. Open it and follow the path to the yellow Security Door. Go through the door for several items. Return to the drawbridge at the start of the level and go across. The door automatically opens for you. There’s a multitude of monsters as you walk north. Keep going to a room with a switch. The switch takes you to the hidden Level 24 (Military Base), but don’t touch it yet. Press the wall across from the switch to access a hidden elevator. Ride it up to the bridge you crossed earlier and take the box of rockets. Ride back down and press the switch to enter Level 24. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 4: Command Control ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, press the south wall to open a secret door to a room with a backpack and other items. Go through the north passage in the next room, then get onto the elevator in the east wall. Ride up to the high ledge and walk west to the large round chamber. Walk through any of the doors into the inner chamber and take the blue Key. (You can’t leave the chamber until you run over the spot where the card sits.) Take one of the Radiation Suits near the south exit and run to the slime trench. Jump into the trench and walk east. Enter the large room and pick up the goodies, including the Rocket Launcher. Flip the switch and get onto the elevator. (Don’t miss the eleva tor, because you only get one chance.) Return to the large round chamber and go through the north door. Walk down the stairs and down the corridor into the large room. Ride up the elevator and pick up the Armor Vest. Return to the round chamber and go through the west door. Walk south and go through the blue Security Door. Explore the southwest area of the map. Work your way north until you reach the last chamber, which has the yellow Key and an Armor Vest. Walk north to the yellow Security Door. Flip the switch on the left before walking through to raise the secret ramp in the next room, which gives you access to the Exit. Before you flip the switch, make sure to visit the room next door (which has a swastika on the floor in the PC version, but a meaningless symbol in the Jaguar version—hmmm). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 5: Phobos Lab ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, walk north and up the first set of stairs. Blast the barrels and open the south wall to find a Shotgun and several items. Head east through the passage, drop into the slime pooi, and run into the southeast corner. Open the secret door and explore the room with a Rocket Launcher and Armor Vest. Walk west down the corridor, then exit and turn right into the east corridor. Walk out onto the ledge and a secret bridge rises up across the slime pool. Return up the stairs and use the new bridge to enter the room with the yellow Key. Return to the starting room and go through the north door (left of the stairs). Walk through the yellow Security Door to the area west of the slime pool. Ride the elevator down to the circular western room. There are two hidden elevators on the stairs—one north and one south. You can see a platform at the top of each elevator. Ride the southern elevator and pick up the Medikit on it. Ignore the north elevator and walk down the stairs. The niche in the west wall is a secret door. Open it and take the Rad Suit. Press the south wall and enter a room with a Chain Saw; press the next south wall and enter the courtyard with a Soul Sphere. Return to the slime pool and flip the switch across the pool to open a secret door back in the middle slime pool. After you kill the enemies, you can ride the pillars up and “jump” to items on raised platforms. Return to the elevator on the north stairs. At the top, push the east wall. Enter the secret room and push the next wall to enter the pentagram room. The pentagram is a teleport to the starting room. Walk into it, then return to the bridge and the room where you found the yellow Key. From here, move east until you reach a room with a switch. Open the secret door in the south wall to find several nice items, including a Chain Gun, Throw the switch and follow the corridor north and west to the room with the blue Key. Kill the baddies, throw the switch, and go through the north door into the dark room. Follow the southern wall to the small opening. Go through the opening and take the items, then go north and into the Exit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 6: Central Processing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, walk north to the first intersection and turn west. Take the red Key and quickly turn around to fight the monsters that come out of the hidden pens. Go west across the slime pool to the two red Security Doors. Go through either one into the southwest section of the level. As you approach the blue Key, several monsters attack from behind you. Take the Key, jump down into the slime pit, and run into the northeast corner to find a Rad Suit. Return to the center opening in the slime pool wall. Go through the opening to an elevator that takes you up to a Soul Sphere. Run to the platform on the east side of the slime to find an Armor Vest and a trail of items leading to a switch.Throw the switch to open a passage back to the starting area. Walk north to the stair platform, turn east, and march ahead to the blue Security Door. Don’t go through the door yet, though.Walk west to the bridge and then walk south to the secret room (behind a lowered Imp tower). Don’t take the Rad Suit yet; pick up the items and push against the south wall to reveal a hidden room with a Rocket Launcher. Go through the blue door into a room with the yellow Key. Return to the blue Security Door and go through. Explore the corridors.A wall switch in the east corridor opens a passage to the yellow Key room. Don’t go through the passage yet. Return to the blue Security Door, walk west, and run onto the lowered Imp tower.Take the Rad Suit and run north across the main bridge into a long passageway leading from the northeast corner of the slime pool. Follow the passage to a platform of items. Grab as many as you can and go through the door into the courtyard. Approach the pillar with the Soul Sphere and it lowers automatically. Step on the platform, ride up, open the door at the top, and prepare for a massive battle.Walk to the far north and flip the switch at the top. Return to the main chamber and walk west to the newly opened door. Go down either flight of stairs into the dark room and flip the switch in the alcove. A huge group of monsters attacks when you get near the switch, so be ready. Walk through the northwest door to the Exit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 7: Computer Station ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You’ll enter combat the moment you leave the starting room.Work your way to the east, then south, to find a window overlooking the courtyard. Each room has several imps and a box of Shotgun shells. Go up the stairs in the northeast corner. Explore the east room, then walk south into a huge room with a Computer Map and a Chain Gun. Once you have the Computer Map, you know where to find all the secrets, and this level doesn’t need any Keys, so explore one room at a time and use your weapons wisely until you reach the exit in the northeast corner. Kill the Demons and run into the courtyard. The idea is to push all six skull buttons, one at a time, as they appear. Monsters appear every time you push a button, so you have to kill them before pushing the next. The large doors to the north open up after you push the first button, so run up there to find a Rocket Launcher and other goodies. The sixth and final skull button is the Exit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 17: Hell Keep ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, walk north. Stock up on the items and run over to the stairs to the northwest, Climb up the stairs and gaze at the beautiful goodies below: Rocket Launcher, Chain Gun, and Shotgun. Grab all the items, and don’t miss the InvulnerabilityArtifact against the wall. Head east to the large horseshoe-shaped building. There are two monster pens (one on each side) you trip open. Return to the large southern building near the start. There are no secrets inside here, just plenty of monsters. Walk straight ahead and use the Exit. Amen! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 23: Dis ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This wicked level is so tough that we got help from two of our lifelong friends on how to complete it. Here’s one approach as related by our friend Alice Zaye: “Don’t fight the Barons.Turn left, get the Armor Vest, and run as fast as possible to the hail with the Cacodemons. Fire constantly, push forward, get the Soul Sphere, go to the secret door, enter, get the first key, second key, third and out. Speed is the key. Don’t expect to kill much.” Here’s a second, more detailed strategy passed along by her twin sister Sharr De: “Hold down the A button throughout. As soon as the level begins, turn and grab the Armor Vest and run for the door. Go into the room with the severe Cacodemon infestation. Run around the room avoiding the Cacodemons (you may want to backpedal or slide to get around them). Grab the health, to take care of any hits you may have incurred, and the ammo reloads, especially the Plasma Rifle rounds. The berserk pack can also give you a quick health boost.” “Keep running around the room, going around the demons. If you manage to get the demons out of the middle and you see an opening, make a try for the Soul Sphere to really crank your health up. By now, the Barons should have followed you in and are rumbling with the Cacodemons. Run back into the first room and grab the Plasma Rifle and the Rocket Launcher. Use them to polish off any Cacodemons or Barons who venture back into the room.” “Open the secret door in the Cacodemon room. Push the skull button to open the door and grab the Blue Key. Open the Blue Door and grab the Red Key. Open the Red Door and grab the Yellow Key. Open the Yellow Door and walk onto the teleport to finish.” Whether you use Alice strategy or Sharr’s, you win the game when you finish the level and get a fairly lame ending sequence. Congrats! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 24: Military Base ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the start of the level, walk forward and kill everything inside the Imp cage. (There’s a toxic drum inside the cage that you should aim for.) From the cage, walk down the passage to the east room. Walk into the light on the east wall and you drop down to the slime pooi below. Shoot the Imps on top of the pillars and run to the Security Armor. Go back up the elevator to the east room and use the elevator in the southwest corner. Pick up the items, return to the east room, and walk back to the Imp cage courtyard. Go to the west room and pick up the yellow Key. Walk north to the northwest room (with the pentagram). Pick up the Rocket Launcher and go to either of the yellow Security Doors leading into the southeast room. Kill the monsters, pick up the red Key, and turn around to kill the mon sters in the southeast corner of the room. From here, walk west to the red Security Door into the southwest room. More monsters! Kill ‘em and walk around to the alcove in the southwest corner. Blast the barrels and flip the switch to open a secret passage just around the corner. The switch also releases several Demons. Blow away the Demons and take the blue Key in the south room. Walk north to the blue Security Door and open it to get into the north room. Destroy the monsters and push the sections of the east wall until you find a secret passage. Go through the passage into a room of pillars. The pillar at the far end lowers when you reach the bottom of the stairs. Run straight at the pillar before it rises. Now run from pillar to pillar in a clockwise direction to pick up the other items. Return to the north room and drop into the slime pool heading west. Run through the pool until you reach the platform. Walk onto the platform and a secret door opens on the wall across the pool, releasing Imps. Kill the Imps and flip the switch to raise a hidden drawbridge to the Exit. Step off the platform, then on again to open the west wall. Run through the wall, use the elevator, cross the draw bridge, and flip the switch to finish the level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Secrets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOD MODE: Press the PAUSE button to pause the game.
