Defender II by HAL AMERICA, INC Author: DJ Tigresa and MC Pantera Email: djtigresa@classicgaming.com, mcpantera@classicgaming.com Yet another one of our early FAQs written in 1988. This was our 6th FAQ period. The previous 5 in order were Megaman 1, Mike Tyson Punchout, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan), and Legend of Zelda. The last three games, we did as a triple pack when we sold it around locally. In total we were able to crank out 25 FAQs by the time 1988 had ended. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the sequel to 1981's Defender which rocked the gaming world during it's time. Your mission is to rescue the people from aliens trying to abduct them. However, this sequel seems to have borrowed sound effects from some games. The most notable one are those from Mike Tyson Punchout which is our second guide that we have put in writing. We've been helping out with games verbally, now we are typing them up and making money of them. Megaman 1 which is our very first guide made us about 400 dollars and counting. We are only 6 and 7 and we know how to play games. And people say videogames are for boys and girls only like Barbie dolls. What a load of bull. We girls have a right to play videogames as much as the boys do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Options ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You have the option of choosing up to four players at the title screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A button = shoots your bullets to kill enemies and bullets B button = kills everything on the screen minus humans Start = Pause the game D-pad = move in the direction you pressed ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gameplay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you played Defender 1 then you have an idea what Defender 2 is like. All you gotta do is shoot evey single alien in that level and protect the humans. If a human gets captured, kill the alien but not the human. Rescuing the human will make him fall. Catch him for bonus points. You start each stage with 6 bombs and 3 lives. Use them wisely. There are also warps within the stages. Sick of tired of flying all over the place? The warps will take you to the other side of the field instantly. Always be careful of where you are flying. It is not a good idea to fly to fast because there is a lot of "lag" just like in real life where if ou drive a vehicle that stops suddenly but you still move forward yourself. Same applies here. Try to change directions or stop too suddenly and your spacecraft will skid a little bit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You got spinning axes, martians, diamonds, saucers, minibirds and some wierd cube looking enemies to deal with. Some of them shoot bullets at you that you can either avoid or destroy by shooting them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scoring ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You get points for shooting the enemies and rescuing the captured humans. After a wave is completed, you get bonus points for remaining hostages which is multiplied by 200 for the first phase and increases by 100 each stage. If you get 20000 points, you get an extra life and all bombs are replenished. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sound Effects ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starting the game brings the MTPO pre-fight tune. Clearing all enemies brings the MTPO You lost tune. There are even sound effects from MTPO where you hit the ground, dodge a punch, or hit someone. You hear these when you kill an enemy, new enemy appears, or shoot your bullets. There seems to be no end to this game so the object here is to see how far you get. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Closing notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for reading this guide, be sure to tell your friends about this guide and we'll print them a copy as well for a small fee. But in the meantime, we'll give the Usenet a try. That way we won't have to print out so much or have to sell floppy disks for just a single file. Till then take care. Our next guide will be Vanguard for the Atari 2600. Followed by another triple pack (Super Mario Bros 2 and Metroid for NES and Doki Doki Panic for Famicom Disk System which Super Mario Bros 2 is hacked from). -Chiguretha and Pansela Steel aka Ice Queen X and Ember Queen Copyright 1988
