(Can you tell we’ve been watching a bit too much Entertainment Tonight?) Dragon is yet another SMS game converted from a bigger system—in this case, the Super NES—but it’s been given a tiny downgrade for the SMS. Dragon features both one- and two-player modes. In the Battle Mode, you and a “friend” fight each other in a Street Fighter 11-type scenario. In the Story Mode, you bat tle through ten stages (mostly) based on scenes from the movie. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIPS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The controls in Dragon are quite different from other fighting games, so you need to practice like a crazy person until you can easily switch from one fighting mode to another. The best way to do this is to select a two-player Battle and beat the hell out of a stationary opponent. The Flip Kick, Slap, and Throw are the best moves in the game. Make sure you master these before taking on the Story Mode. When you’re ready to play the Story Mode, start out at the “Piece of Cake” difficulty level. This makes it easier to learn the enemies’ attack patterns. Learn when to attack and when to defend. Most enemies have patterns in which you can defend against their attack and then counter-attack. Avoid being cornered or surrounded by two enemies. Keep moving and jumping around so that you’re never in one spot for very long. While Bruce is fighting, he can gain Chi, indicated by the white bar below the energy meter. The more hits you make on an enemy, the more Chi is gained. Some moves, like the Throw and Head Stomp, produce more Chi than others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Modes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the one-player Story Mode, you have to defeat all the levels in order. Attack quickly and strike as soon as the enemies appear on the screen. On a level with a single enemy, a quick attack works because it doesn’t give the computer opponent any time to position itself. On a level with two enemies, the game always sends out the first enemy before the second one, giv ing you time to inflict damage on the first enemy without being cornered by the second. In the two-player Story Mode, you can cooperate with your friend instead of fighting it out at the beginning of the game. Have each player alternate losing a life mirror until one player or the other loses all three, The losing player now has to fight The Phantom in a nightmare. Don’t attack him; just avoid him until he stabs his Kwondon in the ground and disappears. You magically regain all your life mirrors. Both players can do this until Stage 10, when only one player gets to battle The Phantom in a final showdown. In the one-and two-player Battle Modes, ying-yang symbols appear at regular intervals near the top of the screen. Grab the symbols as soon as they appear to recharge your Chi and life meters. In the two-player vs. CPU Battle Mode, there are three Bruces on the screen at once. One strategy is to gang up on the SMS-controlled Bruce and kill him, then go after each other, You can also team up with CPU Bruce to attack your pal. It’s important to memorize the color of your Bruce’s pants as he appears on the screen, so you don’t get confused in the heat of battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contols ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Super NES version of Dragon was naturally configured around the SNES’ four action buttons. With only two action buttons on the SMS controller, the controls needed to be tweaked. Silly programmers.Anyway, here’s the control scheme you’re stuck with: 1 for a Fast Kick, 2 for a Fast Punch, and 1+2 for a Hard Kick or Hard Punch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Close Range Attacks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These moves can be performed only when you are very close to your opponent. Knee: Press the Fast Kick button. Shin Kick: When the enemy is crouching, press the Fast Kick button. Throw: Press away from your opponent and the Fast Punch button. The Throw is one of the most damaging moves. High Kick: Press the Hard Kick button. This move is good for defending against air attacks. Stomp: When your opponent is on the ground after a fall, jump over his midsection, and at the peak of your jump, press Down on the control pad.The Stomp is also a very damaging move. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Short Range Attacks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These moves can only be done when Bruce is fairly close to his opponent. Forearm Smash: You can do this move by press ing the Fast Punch button three times quickly or the Hard Punch button two times quickly. Low Punch: Crouch down and press the Hard or Fast Punch button. Learn to use these punches in a one-two combo. Low Fast Kick: Simple enough. Press Down and the Fast Kick button. Low Hard Kick: Press Down and the Hard Kick button. This move can sometimes knock the opponent off his feet, and is good to use when you’re trying to back up your opponent. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meduim Range Attacks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roundhouse Kick: Press the Hard Kick button twice. The second kick of the two is more powerful. Reverse Kick: Press the control pad away from the opponent and press Hard Kick twice. Split Kick: When two opponents have you sur rounded, stand still and press the Hard Kick button. Jumping Kick: Jump in the air and press either kick button. Chop: Easily one of the most effective moves in the game. Jump and press Fast or Hard Punch. Practice this move to learn its timing and master it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Range Attacks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flip Kick: Along with the Chop, the Flip Kick is one of the most useful moves. To perform it, press the control pad Down and towards the opponent and press the Hard Kick button. Learn the distance required when positioning yourself in front of an opponent before starting this move. The Flip Kick works great against multiple opponents. Flying Kick: Jump into the air, away from or towards an opponent, and press the Fast or Hard Kick button. Flying Chop: Jump up and towards the oppo nent and press the Fast or Hard Punch button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Defensive Moves ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- High Block: Press away from the opponent when he’s attacking at short range. Crouch: Press Down on the control pad. Crouching Block: Press Down and away to help avoid low attacks. Flip: Press Down and Right or Down and Left to perform a flip. The Flip is usually the best means of defense. Reviving: When you’ve been stunned or knocked to the ground, tap any button rapidly to recover. Recovery Kick: If you’ve been knocked down, press the Hard Kick button rapidly to get up with a kick. Counter Throw: When the opponent is grabbing you to perform a throw, quickly press away and the Fast Punch button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fighter Mode ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When your Chi bar is at least half full, you can press the 2 or 5 key to enter Fighter Mode. Unlike Nunchaku Mode, you can’t build up Chi. Bruce is also more prone to being stunned by his opponents while in Fighter Mode.Although there are some neat attacks in Fighter Mode, we don’t recommend using it for a long period of time.Wait until you get enough Chi to enter Nunchaku Mode and use it instead. Ultra-Fast Punch: Press either Punch button repeatedly as fast as possible. Ultra-Fast Kick: Press either Kick button repeatedly as fast as possible. Somersault: Press Up and Left or Up and Right to jump the distance of the screen. Ultra-Fast Jump Kick: While jumping in the air, press the Hard Kick button. Ultra-Fast Flying Kick: The strongest of the Fighter Mode moves, jump in the air and press the Hard Kick button to perform this long range kick. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nunchaku Mode ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When your Chi bar is at least 3/4ths full, you can press the 3 or 6 key to enter Nunchaku Mode. In this mode, you lose your kicking and punching attacks and are limited to the Nunchaku attacks. While in Nunchaku mode, you can gain Chi by alternating between the Hard and Fast Punch buttons. Get into the habit of constantly gaining Chi while waiting for your opponent to attack. With good play, you should never have to lose your Nunchakus. Stab Attack: Press the Hard Kick button to per form this quick short range attack. Swing Attack: Press the Fast Kick button to per form the Swing Attack. It takes longer to per form than the Stab Attack, but takes away much more energy. Use it against crouching enemies. Neck-Tie: Similar to the Throw. When the opponent is close, press towards your opponent and the Fast Punch button. Learn this move, since you’ll need it to defeat the final boss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Defeating the Story Mode ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We recommend starting out at the “Piece of Cake” level when first trying to learn the game, but you can only fight up to Stage 4. On the “Easy” mode, Stage 7 is the furthest you can play. Playing in Normal mode or above allows you to play all ten stages.Although most characters have some moves that work better against them than others, it comes down to skill and good reactions to ultimately beat the Story Mode. Learn how to time your moves so that they are most effective. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 1: Hong Kong ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruce finds trouble at the Lantern Festival Dance when an American sailor tries to take his date. This sailor is armed with a wide variety of attacks and a long chain. Use the Head Slap to knock him down to the ground, then stomp on him from above. If the sailor attacks you while you’re attempting to use the Slap, try the Flip Kick instead. If you allow the sailor to grab you with his chain, you can easily reverse his throw by pressing Back and the Fast Punch button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 2: Gussie Yang’s Kitchen ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After Bruce moves to the U.S., he lands his first job as a chef. Unfortunately, he gets into a fight with another chef over a girl. The Chef first appears alone, but after you deplete half of his energy, he’s joined by a friend. Use the Flip Kick and Slap to knock the Chefs down. The Head Slap works well against the Chef, but sometimes he ducks down and attacks as you land. if this happens, do a Jump Kick over the Chef. He ducks down facing the opposite direction, mak ing it easy for you to land a cheap shot while his back is turned. When both Chefs are on the screen, always focus your attention on the one with the least amount of energy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 3: Seattle ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While in the Gymnasium, Bruce finds another challenger, Scott. Scott likes to attack in quick bursts. You can stand still, block his attacks, and quickly throw him when he’s close, or you can use the Slap to knock him down. If you have enough Chi, take advantage of it and enter the Nunchaku mode. Scott is a cinch to beat with your twirling sticks o’ death. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 4: Oakland ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After rival martial arts teachers find out that Bruce is teaching American students, they invite Bruce to a one-on-one battle with one of their best, Johnny Sun. Johnny is similar to Scott in that he likes to attack in short bursts. You can easily use a High Block to defend against the majority of his attacks, then counter them with a Throw. Johnny can also sometimes be a sucker for the Slap. Again, use Nunchaku mode if possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 5: Hong Kong ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We don’t remember when this happened in the film, but it’s been awhile since we saw it. Two female acrobats attack Bruce with staffs. These are perhaps the toughest enemies in the game. The Head Slap and Flip Kick are the most effective moves to use against them. Make sure you’re always on the move when fighting them—do not let them surround or corner you. Nunchaku mode is sometimes useful against these foes, but doesn’t always do the job. Concentrate on one of the two girls and kill her as soon as possible. Just to make things more difficult, you can’t throw the acrobats, so don’t try. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 6: Bruce's Kwoon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alter defeating Scott in the Gymnasium earlier in the game, Scott declares a rematch. Use the same strategy as before to easily do away with him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 7: Long Beach Staduim ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruce claims that his style of the martial arts is the best, and that he can defeat any opponent in one minute or less. He puts his money where his mouth is in this rematch with a twist: you must defeat Johnny Sun in sixty seconds or less. The best way to accomplish this is to make sure you have enough Chi to enter the Nunchaku mode. In this mode, Johnny can be defeated in as little as 20 seconds. If you can’t enter Nunchaku mode, use the Slap and throw effectively to beat the time limit. Make sure you stomp on him when he’s on the canvas after being hit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 8: Thailand ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Johnny Sun’s big brother didn’t appreciate you beating up on his sibling, so now he wants to fight you. Use the Flip Kick or Nunchaku mode to drain his energy to 50%. After his energy is drained, he runs off the screen into another scene. When you enter this scene, immediately jump in the air and perform a Flying Kick over the oncoming ice block. If you time it right, you should only have to jump over one ice block before you have to resume fighting Johnny Sun’s brother. If another block comes out, jump over it the same way you jumped over the first, and continue to get closer to the enemy. Once you resume fighting, use the Flip Kick or Nunchaku mode to finish him off. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 9: Hong Kong ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The set of Enter The Dragon, Bruce’s biggest hit of all time, is the setting for this fight against the Claw Man. Claw Man attacks at close range with his claw, and by blowing deadly smoke at you from a distance. When you see Claw Man about to blow smoke at you, jump over the smoke and use the Slap to hit him upside the head. You should easily be able to kill the Claw Man with repeated Slaps. If you’re having trouble with the Slap attack, try the Flip Kick instead. Make sure you have enough Chi to enter Nunchaku mode, because you have to use Nunchaku mode to kill The Phantom on the next stage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 10: The Graveyard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You must be able to enter Nunchaku mode when fighting The Phantom or you can’t win. The Phantom attacks using his long-range Kwondon. Even if you have extra lives left, you only have one chance to beat him, so make it count. Once the fight starts, immediately enter Nunchaku mode. Walk up to The Phantom so that he attacks, then step back, out of the reach of his Kwondon. Use the Nunchaku to hit him while he’s recovering from his miss. Keep repeating this process until he gets you trapped in the corner, then jump to the other side of the Phantom and start the pattern all over again. Once The Phantom is out of energy, you must kill him by choking him with the Nunchaku. To do this, get extremely close to the Phantom and pressToward and the B button. You flip over The Phantom and choke him to death, earning yourself a lousy ending sequence.
