Q*Bert by Irem Software Author: DJ Tigresa and MC Pantera Email: djtigresa@classicgaming.com, mcpantera@classicgaming.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Authors' Note ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Q-Bert FAQ is part of the NES completion project which consists of GameFAQ writers like ourselves work together to make an FAQ for every NES/Famicom game ever made. So far we have over 100 FAQs completed on the project. Check this site for more FAQs to be completed. http://www.geocities.com/revned22/nes/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story/Objective ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are Q-Bert (an orange alien or green if you are player 2) and the object of the game is to turn all the block on the field into the specified color shown. Sounds easy, right? Well it's not as easy as you think. No no. There are enemies that plauge the very fields you are on. They will either kill you or jack up the field you are working on by turning the color back to the color before or back to its original color. However, the latter of the monsters can help you out sometimes depending on the levels. There are 36 level which is really nine levels with four stages each of block coloring action. Unlike the arcade, there is some sort of ending. It's funny how Q-Bert (swears?) when he dies and its censored. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Options ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After you choose how many players you want (1-player and 2-player), you get to choose your control scheme. Press A - if you want that direction or B to change it. We recomend the controls according to the direction you want to move: up/right = up/right, up/left = up/left, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aside from what we said above, press Start to start the game and pause it and press Select to decide from 1 or 2 players at the title screen ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scoring ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You get points from stepping onto the squares and when you succeed in stepping on them all, your total for discs left is tallied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Balls - They just come down in random spots and start hopping down the field. They are deadly if touched. Purple Balls - They act like the red balls and when they reach the bottom, they turn into.... Coiley - he is your snakey archnemesis. He pursues you all over the field and he'll kill you if he gets you. Avoiding him is one thing but you might fall off screen by accident or get killed by another enemy while on the run. Be careful Ugg and Wrong-way: These two are opposites. Ugg just stays on one level of the field and hops sideways while Wrong Way hops sideways and upwards and they both stand on the sides of the blocks instead of on them. Sam and Slick - Slick is the one with the glass and Sam has none. These two mess up everything you work for by tampering with marked squares and forcing you to mark them again. They'll help you in later levels too. More on that later. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Items ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are only two items to get Discs: These help you avoid the Coiley when it goes after you. They will take you to the top and Coiley will fall into the abyss. Green peas: they freeze time and allow you to move freely across the board with the only danger being falling off. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gameplay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The field looks something like this 01 11 12 21 22 23 31 32 33 34 41 42 43 44 45 51 52 53 54 55 56 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 You start off with no trouble as you have to paint the blocks one solid color, then you have to change them to two solid colors next level then later on, you have to avoid restepping on marked blocks or they will change back. This is where Sam and Slick can help you. Since they're demark work actually marks so squares for you. There are also times where you have to change the squares to three solid colors Always keep on your toes. You die from falling off the side of the screen. The Coiley moves towards you in a certain pattern depending on where you are on the field. He moves the same way you do (diagonally) The disk appear in andom spots depending on the level. If you manage to clear the stage without using them then your score is tallied as to how many are left on the field. You get extra lives depending on how much you score. We have no specific way to tell you what the score is yet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Levels ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 1: You change the squares to one color Level 2: You change the squares to two colors Level 3: You change the squares to one color but can change it back if a marked color is stepped on. Level 4: You can change the squares to three colors Level 5: Change the sqaures to two colors and change square back to original color if marked square is stepped on Level 6: Change the square to three colors but change color back to previous color Level 7: Change the square one color but marked squares turn into different one if stepped on Level 8: Three colors and marked squares turn back to color before Level 9: Same as level 8 Epilogue: There is a frame that says Finale at the top and Congratulations on the bottom and it shows Q-Bert riding a disk to the top of the square in the middle and a spotlight shows as the crowd cheers. He rides off and the words thank you appear at the bottom. A Coiley rides after him on another disk and you see the censored words from either Coiley or Q-Bert. We don't know who sweared. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game Genie Codes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SXSZGPVG Infinite lives AESPVGAE Start on level 3 GOSPVGAA Start on level 6 AXSPVGAA Start on level 9 PEUOOGIA + PAXZLLIA Start with 1 life ZAXZLLIE + ZEUOOGIE Start with 10 lives ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Closing Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for reading our quicknotes about this game. This FAQ is not much to look at, we're just trying to make it big enough to be considered a complete FAQ. You understand do you.
