AMDs CrossfireX details surface |
It's going to debut in March, in time for CeBIT, there will be support for upto 4 GPUs and consumers will be able to mix and match. But it all comes with a catch.
According to TGDAILY , CrossfireX is slated to enter the market with the driver drop in March, i.e with Catalyst 8.03 in the second week of March.
Support for upto 4 GPUs is being touted and furthermore consumers will be able to utilise different GPUs as well, though the closer the better as the faster card will ramp down to match the slower one.
Whereas there will come a point when the combination of a faster and a slower card will result in slower over-all performance than the faster card alone, the advantages offered by the architecture for closer-matched cards remain viable.
The biggest drawback to the whole deal is the fact that there is no support for Windows XP which means that users who want to benefit from multiple GPU units will need to upgrade to Windows Vista per force.
